The Creating Synergies between Indigenous Practices and Scientific Knowledge (ISIPSK) research project fosters inclusive research through its strategic collaboration with relevant fisheries stakeholders in Ghana. This involves collaboration at the sub-regional level through the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), at the national level through the Fisheries Commission of Ghana, and with fisherfolk at the community level through the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG). Today, we highlight the impact of this collaboration through a testimonial from CaFGOAG.

CaFGOAG was one of two local collaborators to receive a donation of equipment from Dr Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood, the research project lead from the University of St Andrews – UK, to support ongoing research under ISIPSK. The donated equipment to CaFGOAG, which includes a laptop, tablet, printer, camera, hard drive and digital recorder, were received by the association’s President, Nana Kweigyah, and the General Secretary, Kenneth Arthur. This donation occurred during Dr Okafor-Yarwood’s visit to Ghana in July 2024 to conclude fieldwork activities. Find out more about the equipment donation here.
The President of CaFGOAG, Nana Kweigyah, stated in an interview with the Ghana News Agency that their collaboration on the ISIPSK project being implemented by the University of St Andrews represented a significant turning point for CaFGAOG. The project marked their first cross-border collaboration involving the joint implementation of a funded project. In addition to providing equipment, Nana mentioned some key impact of the ISIPSK project on CaFGOAG to include: acquisition of relevant skills particularly for successful grant application, enhanced capacity and a deepened understanding of the importance of collaboration among members of the association.
